Universal Remote Control

a smarter home.

Simply put, a “smart home” is a home where independent systems are integrated on a single platform. Lighting, HVAC, alarm, surveillance, TV, music, access controls and more all come together to centralize control and ensure these systems work together for easier control, increased energy efficiency and enhanced security. Automation explained simply

SmartHome technology is really about integration and automation. Most of us are familiar with an all-in-one handheld remote, or “universal remote”. This type of remote integrates all the system components in a surround sound system, for instance.  The alternative is to have a bunch of individual remotes lying around to control each piece of equipment separately.

Now that we’ve integrated all the components onto a single interface, we can use automation to simplify system control. So, pressing “watch cable” would automatically turn on the TV, A/V receiver & cable box and it would ensure that every component is on the correct input and starts up at a comfortable volume. Even the most technically-challenged can use technology to its fullest potential with this type of remote. Now, let’s take that logic to the whole home…

Now, let’s move the same example above to the whole house. Systems such as lighting, music, hvac, alarm, locks & more are typically separate systems with their own controls. Our automation systems integrate these individual systems onto a single platform. User interfaces can be mobile apps, in-wall touchpanels, handheld remote controls or a combination of all of them. All of the systems can be simply accessed from anywhere inside, and outside, your home. More importantly, the systems can work together to automate routine tasks. Next, let’s explore a popular automation, also called a scene.

the good night scene

Now, let’s take that logic to the whole home. Imagine that it’s bedtime. You press the “GOOD NIGHT” action  button from your in-wall touchpanel, mobile app or in-wall keypad. This button automatically initiates a scene that ensures all your lights are off except for the porch and landscape- which now dim to 60% (click here to find out why). The door locks engage at all doors. The alarm sets to ARM STAY mode. Any music you may have had on tonight has now turned off. Same thing for all the TV’s. Window shades lower. The thermostats throughout the house now set to night mode. Your house is now safe and secure and you’re conserving energy. All at the touch of a single button.

Ready to make your home smarter?

We want to use outdoor lighting to deter crime. Merely having the lights on doesn’t always work so we want the lights to perform an action when someone approaches your home in the middle of the night. Using motion sensing from your surveillance cameras, we can trigger the lights to raise to 100%. By setting the outdoor lighting to 60% overnight, we save energy while sufficiently lighting the property. More importantly, we allow for the 100% preset to be triggered by potential thieves which creates an element of surprise that hopefully scares them away.
